iRest® is the acronym for Integrative Restoration, an approach to yoga nidra developed by Richard Miller, PhD. It is an easy-to-use tool for anyone seeking to reduce physical, emotional or mental stress. The practice of iRest® induces relaxation through the body and mind by activating the parasympathetic nervous system, incorporating time-tested and well-researched psycho-physiological approaches that include sensory, cognitive, and emotional therapies.
Its use dramatically reduces stress, helps overcome insomnia, resolve trauma, neutralize
and overcome anxiety, fear, anger and depression.
iRest® gently guides you through body and breath awareness and an exploration of emotions, cognitions and joy. It is a non-dogmatic, secular practice where you learn to guide yourself through meditative sequences. Once learned, iRest® is a practice that you can easily integrate into your daily routines. As inner tensions decrease, self-confidence and well-being increase, which remains with you as you go about your daily life.
Techniques to manage stress, affirmations to think positively and any other attempt to change ourselves can be useful. We might just need to break an old habitual pattern. But sometimes the physical sensation, the emotion or feeling, the thought or belief hold a deeper message. What if we stopped trying to change ourselves and instead, looked beyond the “messenger” and into the true nature of reality? Yoga Nidra, which is born of a nondualistic tradition, is an opportunity to meet what is present and without trying to change anything, bring to the forefront our true nature- one of peace, compassion and equanimity.
iRest®/Yoga Nidra is based on practices that date back over 2,000 years. They were taught to me by Richard Miller, PhD, a practicing psychologist in the States, who re-languaged the practice to be more accessible in our culture. The practice is grounded in the body. We grow to appreciate our body as a rich source of feedback that always points back to its inherent ground of physical, psychological and spiritual vitality. A form of mindfulness meditation, iRest® is a proven relaxation practice/technique that increases your ability to cope with what life hands you and enriches your sense of well-being.
